How to Avoid Water Weight Gain

By

Being overweight is different than being bloated and carrying a few extra pounds of water weight. Being overweight from too much of a bad diet takes work, time and patience to work off. Water weight, on the other hand, can usually be managed much more easily.

The caveat here is that there are no medical conditions that could be causing that bloated feeling. As always, check with your doctor to verify there are no additional problems. Assuming you have plain old water weight gain, the solutions are normally fairly straight forward.

The natural instinct is to take in less water. In fact, the opposite is true. Water is the lifeblood of your metabolic system. Make sure your getting those eight full glasses a day. As you begin to drink more water and expel that water, your body no longer feels the need to horde what it has. Because when you don't drink enough, that's exactly what your body will try to do.

Next, take a hard look at your sodium intake. Yes, our bodies need it, but not in the quantities that we normally consume. If you are taking in too much sodium, it will act like a clog on your system and cause you to retain water..

Also, watch your calcium and potassium. Make sure these two are in balance because they can have an effect on how your body processes water. Not having enough or too much of either one can throw your system out of whack and fool it into holding onto water it doesn't necessarily need.

Some people use diuretics to aid in the process of shedding excess water weight. These can be obtained by prescription or over the counter. Again, talk with your physician about the pros and cons of using these. But, if you drink enough water, watch what you are eating and make sure your nutrients are balanced, everything else being equal, you should no longer have an issue with excess water weight.

Also, cut out the sodas. They are not water! They are in no way a substitute. As a matter of fact, there really is no substitute for just good, clean water. And for most everyone, what comes out of our tap is just fine. If you are paranoid, by a plastic bottle, a filter for your tap and refill as needed. No sense spending a fortune on bottled water. Don't even get me started down that road.

If you feel bloated, aren't drinking enough water and are generally fine medically, chances are you need to drink more water. Have a look at your sodium, potassium and calcium and get some exercise. A brisk walk will do wonders for this condition as well.
